FinOps in Education Platforms
Cost governance when your users are students provisioning cloud labs — and why peak-to-trough matters more than a monthly snapshot.
Structural cost drivers
Education platforms carry unusual cost: student lab accounts, R&D data environments, and migration overlap when moving from legacy hosting. A single monthly number without context misrepresents the trajectory.
Three phases
Our 14-month Cost Explorer window showed distinct eras:
- EKS platform operations — ~$2,660/mo average
- Rationalization with EKS retired — trough ~$1,612
- Migration and MTN ECS production ramp
Tools
OpenCost and AWS Budgets for visibility. Per-student cost tracking in the Teacher platform connects curriculum to accountability. Tag policies enforce allocation at account creation.
How to talk about it
Lead with the optimization delta and migration context. An elevated month during dual-run migration is not the steady state. We also moved legacy OVH workloads to AWS with meaningful annual savings.
